Robert Schad (*1953) is one of the most renowned contemporary sculptors working with steel. Using solid square-bar steel, he creates drawings in space whose lines are not formed by bending and shaping but instead by welding on diverse long straight sections. These welded sections are polished, and so appear organic, like limbs. These drawings of movement produce broad three-dimensional sweeps and arches in space; the physical weight of the solid steel fades and a progression is created that dances in the space.

This catalogue presents works by Schad, like for example, the 136-metre-long Stuttgarter Weg (1986/87), placed between the parliament buildings and the house of representatives in Stuttgart and Cruz Alta (2007) located on the pilgrim’s square in Santuário de Fatima, Portugal: at 34 metres, the tallest crucifix in the world.
