The Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) was a significant trailblazer for modern art. His oeuvre covered the spectrum from courtly portraits to paintings, drawings and prints showing witches, saints and demons and breaking open the gates to realms where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur. The book's cloth cover shows his mysterious "Maja vestida", one of his most famous paintings.
