A Photographic Dialogue Between East and West: 200 Pan-German Perspectives from 1945 to 1989
The exhibition catalog brings together photographs by approximately 200 of the most significant photographers from East and West Germany, placing images from 1945 to 1989 in direct dialogue with one another. In this dynamic juxtaposition, a visual exchange unfolds around childhood and youth, work and living environments, protest, politics, fashion, and everyday life. Each photograph from the East is paired with its counterpart from the West, revealing surprising similarities and differences. The sequence of images tells the story of postwar hardships, the years of reconstruction, and society’s reawakening spirit. It also makes the trauma of division palpable, as well as the restrictions and forms of freedom on both sides of the Wall. The result is not a competitive comparison, but an unusually engaging, artistic, and biographical space of resonance.
