The life and work of Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio (1571–1610), are more fascinating than those of almost any other artist of his time. He transcended the conventions of the Renaissance; he was not concerned with ideal beauty or the exaggeration of reality. His masterful handling of light and shadow, along with his revolutionary use of sacred and secular themes, revitalized painting and made him a pioneer of the Baroque.
