Monika Kiss Horvàth – Bar
Monika Kiss loves Italy and its bars. The images she collected over the years take us from northern to southern Italy, from Milan, Florence, and Rome to Bari and Palermo. She does not expose what goes on inside these public places where we encounter everyday Italianità at its most intense. She photographs the outside of these everyday mysteries. She hardly ever shows people, but rather focuses on the architectural design of these small centers of urban Italian life: the designs of their doorways, the patterns of the beaded curtains, sometimes a door ajar that allows us a glimpse of the interior, and most of all the omnipresent sign BAR—elegant and luxurious in a northern Italian metropolis, simple and homemade in a small southern town, and sometimes crumbling above a door locked shut long ago.
Monika Kiss Horvàth, born in 1958 in Zug, Switzerland, lives and works as an artist in Zurich and Lucerne.
