A collection of photographs capturing the deadpan geographic beauty of vast stretches of Canada and North America, taken by Canadian photographer Scott Conarroe as he travelled the continent documenting railways.

Scott Conarroe's project began as a study of Canadian and US railways, as well as the coastlines of these hulking giants. Over time, the images became a portrayal of the westernmost front of civilisation—a bloc of the British Empire and a Cold War superpower. By Rail and By Sea: Scott Conarroe depicts images of idealistic beauty blocked by portions of post-industrial malaise and decay. We are forever approaching these grand vistas and roadways, where images of capitalist infrastructure masquerade as an idealised sense of freedom. Comparable to Stephen Shore and Joel Sternfeld when contextualising the tradition of exploring the 'cinematography' of a peculiar North American ennui, with this publication Conarroe is brought to the forefront of their movement.

By Rail and By Sea is an important photographic statement, holding the kind of deadpan beauty that plays on themes of isolation, transience and the infinite.

This publication was undertaken in collaboration with the Stephen Bulger Gallery in Toronto.
