The work of Bruno Gironcoli (1936–2010) occupies a unique position in the field of contemporary international sculpture. This Austrian artist has hit upon an unmistakable stylistic vocabulary which he has continued to develop from his early filigree wire objects right through to the vast sculptures of the last two decades. In parallel with this he has produced an extensive oeuvre of works on paper.

The catalog under review on the exhibition at the Belvedere Vienna covers ground that has, to date, been neglected: three years after his death and 16 years after the last major exhibition of his work, at MAK, Vienna, his oeuvre was reassessed by contrasting it with important and prominent exponents of international art. For the first time, Gironcoli’s oeuvre was viewed in a network of relationships with both classic positions and important contemporary ones.

The catalog comprises works by Gironcoli from the years 1965 through 2004 which it uses as a starting point for assembling works according to topics such as corporality / sexuality, image / portrait and three- / two-dimensional.
