Vodun: African Voodoo, an exhibition helded at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in April 2011 presented to the public for the first time ever an exceptional selection of Vodun pieces from Benin and Togo drawn from the private collection of Anne and Jacques Kerchache.

Intended to complement the exhibition, the Vodun: African Voodoo catalog features over 150 photographs taken by Yuji Ono as part of a special commission. The unusual career of Jacques Kerchache and his passion for African statuary are presented through a variety of personal documents and photographs.

A selection of his writings on African art and Vodun in Benin, some of which have never been published before, is also included. Finally, contributions by specialists in the field such as Marc Augé, Suzanne Preston Blier, Gabin Djimassé, and by the artist Patrick Vilaire shed new light on African Vodun, making the catalog a true resource book on the subject.


Présentée à la Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain à Paris, l'exposition Vaudou dévoile pour la première fois au public un ensemble exceptionnel d'oeuvres vaudou du Bénin provenant de la collection d'Anne et Jacques Kerchache. Conçu dans le prolongement de l'exposition, le catalogue Vaudou rassemble plus de 150 photographies réalisées par Yuji Ono dans le cadre d'une commande spécifique.

Le livre revient également sur le parcours atypique de Jacques Kerchache et sur sa passion pour la statuaire africaine à travers de nombreux documents et photographies personnels. À cette occasion sont publiés ses textes sur l'art africain et sur le vaudou du Bénin, dont certains étaient jusqu'à présent restés inédits. Enfin les contributions de spécialistes comme Marc Augé, Suzanne Preston Blier, Gabin Djimassé ou encore de l'artiste Patrick Vilaire apportent un nouvel éclairage sur le vaudou africain, faisant de ce catalogue un ouvrage de référence sur le sujet.
