This publication presents the whole variety of different photobooks from the German post First World War era. Documenting not only the books as they were when published but also their editions and special features.
Concentrating on the German publications from 1918 to 1945, the international significance of the volumes is underlined. More than seventy texts by specialists analyse the distinctive features of the books, their printing, marketing and importance for photo history. Special publishers and book series are presented.
Monographically, the publications of several photographers are examined in essays. These are for example Karl Blossfeld, Heinrich Hauser, Heinrich Hoffmann, Emil Otto Hoppé, Albert Renger-Patzsch or Paul Wolff. More general articles concern architectual photography, propaganda-works, childrens books illustrated with photographs, technical manuals, film as a theme for books and various other categories.
An added register makes this volume a work of reference for the German photography scene. Also, the rich illustrations show the photobooks, inside and outside, as well as some marketing material. Many rare photobooks are thereby newly discovered.
