In the 1960s and 1970s Brice Marden (born 1938) made a name for himself with bright, monochrome colour panels, first in shades of grey and curbed tones, later with brighter, more vigorous colours and ambitious combinations of multiple canvases. In the mid-eighties he started to draw calligraphic signs; in the 90s his work shifted once again to an increased use of colour.

This extensive volume features more than 170 of Marden's innovative paintings and designs from the sixties to the present. It examines the artist's development with a special attention on the fields colour, surface and light.
